Today I witnessed a tragedy

Driving home from the beach, I was stopped at a traffic light.  There, crossing the street, was a mother duck and her duckling.  Just as soon as I caught a glimpse of them waddling across, a car sped by and crushed the duckling.  What happened next was astounding.  The mother duck circled around the duckling and wouldn’t budge.  Well intentioned drivers stopped and honked at her and some even got out of their cars to clap loudly to spook her out of the road.  But she wouldn’t leave her baby.  As the light turned green and I drove off, I couldn’t help but think:
  1. Mothers are amazing. Their love and devotion to their children knows no bounds.  This was a dramatic display of love that will stay with me for a long time.
  2. We are blessed to have caregivers step in and assume that role of loving “mother” at some of the most inopportune times.  And to total strangers.  Through blizzards, hurricanes, nights, weekends, Holidays, earthquakes, and as we saw recently in New York, shootings, the caregiver is there to provide care, comfort and love.  They put the patient first.  They are incredible.
